The Change of Islamist NGOs in Turkey

Islamic formations, which had begun coming into prominence with the civil society since the mid-1990s, entered processes of change and transformation with the conditions in Turkey at the time while differing in their actors, goals, and fields of activity. When noting the operational focus of each organization, areas clearly would be able to exist that may not have been considered or that were inaccessible. In the same way, the situation where the forms of activity did not attain the qualities that would meet the objectives provides information about what kind of activity opportunities have been overlooked within the process. The breakdown of the actors who were positioned as the dominant figures in Islamic civil society organizations resulted in the goals and targets being resisted or suppressed thanks to these identities.

PURPOSE

The goal is for a map of the current situation to be prepared by introducing an areal and purposive analysis based on the actors within the framework of the impacts mentioned in the project.

THE SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

The Scope of the Project

Weight is given to the analyses based on the purposes, areas of activity, methods, and actors in the way that will be a study area generally covering the entire history of the establishment and institutionalization of NGOs within this project, wherein Islamic NGOs in Turkey will be addressed from a “holistic” perspective. The scope of the project within the framework of this subject is: the texts that fall within the field of Islamic NGOs, the booklets and brochures printed in this field, and the interviews that will be done with the names that draw forth regarding the field, which comprise the resources in the study.

The Objectives of the Project

Which gaps the formations with Islamic objectives filled inside the presence of Turkish civil society are taken into account, as well as the fraying that these formations produced at the temporal level in the organizational sense. To which stages these formations’ goals have concretely evolved and the processes of overlapping and separating the actors with the goals will be discussed; a concrete map has been extracted of the areas that current trends fill. Emphasis will be made on the relationship the areas of study have with the conditions outside of civil society by subjecting the processes of institutionalization and human resource management that need to exist in the structure of a civil society to analysis on the axis of the economic and social conditions.
