2nd Istanbul Education Conference Held

The Second Istanbul Education Conference was organized by the Research Center for Education Policy (EPAM) on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at Mercure Hotel Altunizade under the theme "Mass Education: The Search for a Way Out". Deputy Minister of National Education, Turkiye Dr.Sadri Şensoy graced the occasion on behalf of the minister for National Education while Dr. Saeeda Shah, a senior faculty member from the University of Leicester participated as the keynote speaker.
The program that comprised two sessions namely, "Searching for new ways in Mass Education in the World" and "Searching for new ways in Mass Education in Turkiye" received rich participation from relevant groups including academicians, postgraduate students and experts from the field.
After the opening speech by Assoc. Dr. İbrahim Hakan Karataş, the Director of the Research Center for Education Policy (EPAM) İLKE's executive board's chairman Prof. Dr. Lutfi Sunar addressed the audience. Following the welcome speeches, Deputy Minister of National Education Dr. Sadri Şensoy made his speech in which he mentioned that complimentary textbooks as well as supplementary resource books are distributed in schools and efforts are being carried out to increase the school enrollment as well as towards budget allocation in the sector.
Dr. Saeeda Shah, who works at the University of Leicester gave a speech stating that education should be considered in a context with the historical society. At the same time, she expressed that the pandemic period has caused quite important developments for digitalization in education.
Prof. Dr. Üstün Ergüder participated as a speaker in the first session titled which was moderated by Assoc. Dr. Omer Avci. Prof. Dr. Üstün Ergüder mentioned the need for studies to increase the quality of education by adopting a participatory and egalitarian approach. Afterwards, senior diplomat and D-8's Director, Ahmar Ismail expressed that, “We cannot achieve sustainable economic development without investing in education and research."
In the second session that was moderated by Assoc. Dr. Yusuf Alpaydın, Ömer Özkan from Marmara University, Dr. Akif Pamuk and YEKDER's Chairman Hüseyin Türkan expressed their views. Ömer Özkan stated that “The search for an alternative is currently progressing with a movement coming in Turkey. The Ministry of National Education and policymakers also need to take action for alternative education”. Hüseyin Türkan, on the other hand, emphasized the necessity of keeping up with digitalization and correct gamification. Dr. Akif Pamuk, stated that education is a social construction and learning takes place in a cultural environment hence we should consider education in this way.
The second IEK which received rich participation and attracted a great deal of attention from different groups concluded after the presenting of gifts and souvenirs.
