Workshop on Foreign Language Teaching in Compulsory Education Held

Category: EPAM History: 12 December 2025

At the "Foreign Language Teaching in Compulsory Education" workshop organized by the ILKE Foundation Research Center for Education Policy (EPAM), the current state of foreign language education in Türkiye was comprehensively addressed.

At the event held on May 8, 2025, the teaching of different languages, such as English, German, French, and Arabic, was scrutinized; while the primary focus was on compulsory education, its reflections from pre-school to higher education, and the unique challenges encountered at all educational levels were also discussed.

Building upon the problems identified in the Policy Note on Foreign Language Teaching in Compulsory Education in Türkiye, issues such as the low rate of curriculum compliance with CEFR, confidence problems created by crowded classrooms, the removal of preparatory classes, and the lack of student motivation for learning foreign languages, weakening language acquisition were raised at the workshop, and solution proposals were discussed. In the sessions moderated by Lecturer Mehtap Güven Çoban, teachers from different educational levels and academics specializing in the field of language came together to share their field experiences and observations.

Participants drew attention to the fact that problems experienced in areas such as the insufficient reflection of language teaching approaches in the curriculum, deficiencies in the use of digital tools, and teacher competencies limit student success. At the end of the workshop, high-quality outputs were obtained that will form the basis for policy recommendations for sustainable and effective foreign language teaching.
