EPAM’s 8th Workshop Discusses an Increasing Trend in Open Education at High School Level and Dropouts

Research Center for Education Policy (EPAM) organized its 8th workshop on December 28, 2022 under the theme "Migration to Upper Secondary High School and School Dropouts". The workshop was conducted by Gürkan Ünver and Dr. Uğur Özalp while EPAM’s Director Dr. Selim Tiryakiol moderated the sessions.

The workshop started with Gürkan Ünver's presentation on Absenteeism and Reasons for Dropout. Ünver explained absence from school and the resultant dropout, together with his work and experiences in the field. Ünver touched upon the reasons for school that included dropout due to family, school, environment and individual reasons. He stated that the highest rate of absenteeism and dropout among students was among 12th grade students.

Continuing the workshop, Dr. Uğur Özalp discussed the increasing rate of open education at the Upper Secondary High School level. Özalp stated that the number of students opting for open upper secondary high Schools increased dramatically in 2022 compared to the previous year. He concluded his speech by addressing the reasons and potential consequences of the intense demand for education.

The workshop, which dealt with one of the current issues facing education sector concluded with questions and answers session. Plaques were also presented to the guest spakers at the end of the workshop.
