A Critique of Development Approaches Seminar Held at the İLKE Foundation

Research Centre for Social Thought and Policy (TODAM) hosted  Prof. Dr. Sari Hanafi a faculty member of the American University of Beirut and President of the International Sociological Association on April 1, 2022, at the ILKE Foundation.

Sari Hanafi discussed the current understanding of well-being in the indices of human development and social development, addressing the approaches to social development. When social development approaches are examined, many different approaches, from economic growth and GDP/GNP to social welfare and happiness indices, are measured through a combination of some structural, objective, ability, and subjective approaches.

Sari Hanafi explained how all these approaches, while useful for showing how the majority of the population experiences the result of development,  besides how such development can produce marginality, vulnerability, and human rights violations. Hanafi made the situation a topic of discussion and concluded his presentation by emphasizing that what is insufficient is an approach that looks at otherness indicators, not structural and perpetrator indicators.
